Bill Chafin Herald Dis Obituaries: Jim Travis Hamilton Passes Away at 81

Jim Travis Hamilton, a retired Circuit Court Judge, passed away on Sunday at the age of 81. He was known for his dedicated service to the community and his long-standing career in law.

Hamilton began his legal career in Nashville before moving to Mt. Pleasant in 1971. He was appointed part-time Assistant District Attorney in 1973 and continued to practice law while serving in this capacity until he was elected as a circuit judge in 1982. He served in this position until May 2015.

Prior to his legal career, Hamilton had already made a name for himself in politics. At the age of 26, he was elected Mayor of Selmer in 1967, making him one of the youngest mayors in the United States. This achievement demonstrated his strong leadership skills and ability to connect with people from all walks of life.

Hamilton's educational background is also notable. He graduated from Memphis State University School of Law in 1966 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in history from MTSU in January 1963. His mother taught school at Selmer High School for 37 years, and his father ran the Hamilton family dry cleaners, which remained in business from 1916 until 1985.

Hamilton is survived by his loving family and friends. Condolences may be extended online at . Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday at 11:00 A.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Ray Fraley and Randy McNeece officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens.
